What Is a Radiologist?

The Physician Behind Your Medical Images

When you have an X-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, mammogram, or other imaging exam, capturing the images is only one part of the process.

A radiologist is a physician who specializes in interpreting medical images. Radiologists complete medical school followed by years of specialized training that prepares them to recognize injuries, disease, and other abnormalities throughout the body.

After your imaging exam, a radiologist carefully reviews the images, considers the clinical information provided by your healthcare team, and creates a report describing the findings. That information helps your doctor understand what is happening and determine the appropriate next steps in your care.

You may never meet the radiologist who reads your images, but they are an important part of your healthcare team.

What Happens After Your Imaging Exam?

  • Your Images Are Captured

Your imaging exam is performed at a hospital, imaging center, or other healthcare facility.

  • A Radiologist Reviews the Study

A radiologist examines the images, looking for findings that may help explain symptoms, identify an injury, detect disease, or monitor an existing condition.

  • Your Radiologist Creates a Report

The radiologist documents their findings and provides a medical interpretation of the study.

  • Your Healthcare Provider Receives the Results

The report becomes part of the information your healthcare provider uses to determine your diagnosis, treatment, or next steps.

Specialized Expertise

Radiology is a broad medical specialty. Just as other physicians may specialize in a particular area of medicine, radiologists can pursue additional training and expertise in specific types of imaging, procedures, or areas of the body.

Gem State Radiology brings together physicians with expertise across a range of radiology specialties.
